Superman House Auction Today!
The auction for my Superman house cover starts today!
For those of you who don't know, Brad Meltzer found the house in Cleveland where young Jerry Siegel created Superman. The house is falling apart, despite the best efforts of the elderly couple living there now. They're proud of the house's history, but the city of Cleveland won't even place a plaque there. Brad vowed to them that he'd figure out a way to save the house and get them that plaque.
Brad got busy. He contacted his prodigious comics contacts, and few comic geeks outside of comics, and asked if they'd donate pieces to raise money for the house.
Mine went up on eBay this morning. I'm going to provide a higher res image here to whet your appetite.

On his blog, Greg Rucka debates the point of why Superman isn't evil. "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Greg says it's because Superman is an ideal, and we should treasure our ideals.
Let me make a different point. The most evil people on our planet have been scared little souls. They're driven by insecurity, taking vengeance for old wounds on the rest of the world. Evil dictators like Saddam Hussein and Hitler had miserable childhoods, and ended up murdering tailors and housewives by the truckload. It's a rare for petty and mean to be taken to the point of international genocide, but that's what it is at base. They're gnawed by fear in their guts.
There is a lot to fear in this world. Oftentimes, "no good deed goes unpunished." Superman is what happens when people commit good deeds, despite fear of the punishment. When instead of hiding, you do your good deeds with four-color boldness, knowing that it can make you a target. And that happens all the time. I've seen it happen, and that's why Superman is real.
