The house that built Superman
In the course of researching his new novel, The Book of Lies, Brad Meltzer visited the house in Cleveland where Jerry Siegel grew up. It was here that young Jerry came up with the superhero that inspired all others, Superman. The house is in bad shape. At least it's still there: down the street, Joe Shuster's house had already been torn down.
Brad resolved to save the house. He contacted an amazing list of comics talent, and he contacted me. Could I create a piece to auction off for the house? When he told me the cause and the others involved I knew it had better be good.
Today on September 2 Brad announced the formation of the Siegel and Shuster Society. On board are Stephen Colbert, George Perez, Alex Ross, Neil Gaiman, the family of Jerry Siegel, and way more superstars than I could list off here. Click the link, read the full story, donate some cash, and perhaps win one of the first-week auctions for a stunning piece by Dan Brereton, Jim Lee, or George Perez and others.
I wish I could show you a picture of my piece, but it won't go up on eBay until September 9. It's an homage to this cover by Joe Shuster, and I think it epitomizes the brash youthful energy of the Siegel and Shuster Superman:
As a small consolation prize for not getting to see my auction piece yet, here's the fully digitally painted front and back cover I did for the second Heroes collection! It's not quite as big of news, but I'm pretty proud of it (Click for the full image).
