NBA Playoffs
There are many kinds of geeks in the world. Some of them can pass as normal upstanding citizens. Then there are geeks like me, both male and averse to watching sports.
I like playing sports. I like watching friends playing. I just haven't had much interest in watching a bunch of strangers play sports. It's like watching other people eat: I'd rather join in than cheer someone else on.
My Dad has taken the effort to explain TV basketball to me. Who the players are, who the coaches are, what strategies they're using. He's being very patient.
I should mention that both of my brothers became sports fans and high school athletes without any special prompting from our Dad. I'm pretty uncoordinated.
Anyhow, Lisa's a bit worried. There's about 5 hours of NBA playoffs most nights of the week. This could be pretty time consuming! Lisa has never suffered through sports widowhood before.
I'm glad he's doing it now, but it's too bad that my Dad didn't take the time to introduce me to sports when I was a kid. We would have had a lot more to talk about. And perhaps I would've gotten into sports and had a 'normal' high school experience. It's odd to imagine.
On the other hand, I'm very happy with where I ended up now. I adore my wife, I love my geeky job, and I value my friends and their lack of sports trivia. And now I'm pleased to have something to talk about with my Dad.
